Individual Note

Nellie Hilda WHITTINGHAM was always known as Hilda . Nellie Hilda WHITTINGHAM was born in 1893 as the middle child of 3 children. Her father was Albert WHITTINGHAM, a Wood Engraver and Publican, and her mother was Laura WHITTINGHAM nee ALLART. Hilda's father Albert WHITTINGHAM also ran the Turks Head Pub at 31 Worcester Street, Birmingham for many years. Family legend had it that Hilda was born there (although her birth certificate says otherwise). By 1911 aged 18 Hilda was working as a Corsetiere. In 1915 aged 22 Hilda, then a Corset Maker, married Hubert PERRY, then a Tram Conductor. After their marriage Hilda & her husband moved to 201 Stoney Lane, Sparkbrook, Birmingham. Hilda lived here whilst her husband was in the Army during 1916 to 1919. Hilda & Bert only had one child. The family then moved to a shop at 189 Stoney Lane (on the corner of Chesterton Rd) from about 1921 until about 1934 where Hilda sold corsets (her mothers occupation) & wool, baby clothes etc. In about 1934 they moved to 33 Stotfold Road, Maypole, Birmingham. In about 1945 her husband retired on ill-health grounds and they moved to Wembury, near Plymouth. In the early 1960's Hilda & her husband moved back to Solihull to live in a Granny flat extension to her adult child's house. The whole family unit then moved to Portland in 1969, where Hilda & Bert later moved into Ladymead Hall sheltered accomodation. Hilda remained there after Bert's death in 1983 and finally moved to Adair House, Bincleaves Road, Weymouth in 1985. Hilda died on 11 Jun 1985 aged 92 in Weymouth Hospital after a stroke following an operation on a broken hip.
