Individual Note

Probably known as Young John in his early years, Walter THOMAS is believed to have been born in Bitterne nr. Southampton, Hampshire in 1836. Walter's father is believed to be John Thomas THOMAS, but his mother is unknown. Walter John THOMAS had an older stepsister Susannah Eliza THOMAS born in Bitterne in 1832. Walter's father John Thomas THOMAS is believed to have died in 1836. Walter's older stepsister Eliza was taken in by the parents of her mother, John's first wife. But no definite trace can be found of Walter THOMAS in the 1841 census. In 1851 it is likely he was in Portsmouth Gaol as a Vagrant. By 1855 Walter John THOMAS seems to have been associating with Isabella (BACK)THOMAS (but no marriage record has been located); as in Jul 1855 they were both convicted of Housebreaking and Larceny, in the Lewes Assizes, and sentenced to 4 yrs gaol. In the 1861 census it is believed Walter THOMAS was again in Lewes prison. By 1862 it seems that Walter THOMAS was in the Brighton area with Isabella, by whom he had a daughter Caroline born in Brighton in 1863. Walter THOMAS and Isabella went on to have twin sons, Wallace & Walter, born in Brighton in 1867; and another daughter Ellen born in Brighton in 1870. Walter THOMAS died in Brighton in 1882 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the City Cemetery, Bear Road, Brighton. His partner Isabella survived for another 5 years.
