Individual Note

Laura ALLART was born in Ladywood, Birmingham in 1864, as the fourth of seven children. Her father was John Woodward ALLART, then a Brassfounder; and her mother was Matilda ALLART nee SMITH. By 1881 aged 16 Laura was working as a corset Stay Maker. In 1890 aged 22 Laura, a spinster of no stated occupation married Albert WHITTINGHAM, then a Wood Engraver. Laura and Albert had 3 children, one of whom was Nellie Hilda WHITTINGHAM born in 1893. Laura's husband Albert, a Wood Engraver by Trade, also ran theTurks Head Pub, 31 Worcester St, Birmingham, for many years. By 1903 Laura & her husband were living at 3 Runcorn Road, Moseley. By 1905 Laura and her husband had moved to 131 Ladypool Rd, where Laura started a business as a Corsetier. Her husband Albert died there in 1906. She retired in 1924 aged 60 and moved to Rubery with her sister Ada, who had a shop there. Then she went to live in Phipson Rd, Sparkhill, Birmingham with her sister Emily "Pem" about 1933. She then moved to a cottage in Tugby village "The Firs" (acquired by her son Harry WHITTINGHAM, who was then living on the main Uppingham Road, Tugby) about 1934 at the age of 70. Harry WHITTINGHAM "accidentally" dropped Laura's large aspidistra during the move. She suffered badly with arthritis in later years.

Laura died on 12 Mar 1952 aged 87 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Tugby Churchyard, Leics on 17 Mar 1952.
