Individual Note

Jane Matilda VILLAGE was born in Birmingham in 1892 as the fourth of five children. Her father was John VILLAGE, a Tinplate Worker, and her mother was Catharine VILLAGE nee STOLL. In 1909 aged 17 Jane VILLAGE sailed from Liverpool to the USA as a Steerage Class passenger on the Cunard Line 'Carmania' arriving in New York on 03-Nov-1909 to visit her Uncle Frederick STOLL in Connecticutt. Her passage was paid for by her grandfather Anthony STOLL. Jane was chaperoned on the voyage by Katherine JAQUIER nee GODSON, her older cousin. But Jane VILLAGE became homesick, and returned home from the USA to Birmingham as a Third Class passenger on the White Star Line 'Laurentic' which sailed from New York arriving in Liverpool on 09-Jan-1910 . By early 1911 aged 18 Jane and her elder sister Louisa VILLAGE were looking after their elderly grandfather Anthony STOLL, who died in late 1911 aged 91. In 1915 aged 22 Jane VILLAGE, then a Restaurant Waitress married Ernest BOWEN, a Postman. Jane had 7 children, 1 of whom died in infancy. Jane Matilda BOWEN nee VILLAGE died in hospital in Birmingham in late 1955 aged 63 having suffered from dementia for her last 5 years.
