Individual Note

Harry Whittingham studied at Glasgow University and trained as a Precision Engineer.

During World War I he was a Specialist in grinding glass for experimental Optical Range Finders.

Between the wars he was living on the main Uppingham Road, Tugby.

At the outbreak of World War II in 1939, he moved to Leicester to train Engineers.

About Feb 1941 he went to India to train Engineers, where he stayed for 10 years until about 1951, having become Principal of the Technical College of Japor.

Harry Whittingham returned to the UK about 1951 aged about 60.

However about 1953 he became Landlord of the Duke of Rutland pub at Melton Mowbray, which he ran with his wife for about 15 years until early 1968. They resided at 35 Melbourne St, Melton Mowbray during this period.

As Landlord of the Duke of Rutland, Harry Whittingham was always known as "Stan".

He retired as Landlord in early 1968 shortly after his 77th birthday, but died later that year in a Nursing Home.

According to a cutting placed in the Melton Times (dated Fri 6-Dec-1968) by his widow Mrs Millie Whitingham & his daughter Mrs Joyce Brown, he died on Mon 2-Dec-1968 aged 77 and was cremated at Loughborough on Wed 11-Dec-1968.
