Individual Note

John CLARE was born in Kingston, Oxfordshire, in 1825. John was the fourth of eleven children. His father was James CLARE, then an Ag Lab, and his mother was Mary CLARE nee GREEN. He grew up in a small agricultural village. In 1848 aged 23, John, then an (agricultural) Labourer, married Charlotte HARRIS, who had grown up in the same village. By 1858 John and Charlotte had had 4 children in Kingston. But by 1860 the whole family had moved to St Giles, London, to seek a better life, where John found work as a Stableman/Ostler. John & Charlotte had 6 more children whilst in London, one of whom was a daughter Ellen CLARE who was born in 1870. In the overcrowded conditions of London, John CLARE died in 1875 aged 49, being survived by his wife.
