Individual Note
Isabella BACK was born in the small rural village of Rodmell, Sussex, in 1829, as the third of 4 chidren born to John BACK, an Agricultural Labourer, and his second wife Mary BACK nee LOWER. In the UK 1841 Census aged 11 IsabelIa was living at home in Rodmell with her parents and 3 other siblings. Her father John BACK however died shortly afterwards in 1842, which is likely to have caused the family great hardship. (Isabel's surname seems to have been given as BACK or BECK or THOMAS to suit circumstances after she leaves Rodmell). Isabel cannot be located in the 1851 census. Isabel's daughter Emma died in Rodmell in 1854 aged 1. Isabel's son Joseph is known to have died in Newhaven Union Workhouse in 1959 aged 7. By 1855 Isabel seems to have been associating with Walter John THOMAS (but no marriage record has been located); as in Jul 1855 they were both convicted of Housebreaking and Larceny, in the Lewes Assizes, and sentenced to 4 yrs gaol. By 1861 aged 31 Isabel seems to be working in Brighton as a Servant. By 1871 aged 41 Isabel THOMAS was lodging (without a partner but with 4 children) in 42 Holland Street, Brighton. By 1881 Isabel THOMAS aged 50 and her partner Walter THOMAS plus 4 children were living a few doors away at 36 Holland Street in Brighton. At this time Isabel was working as a Washer woman (with her 16 yr old daughter Caroline working as an Ironer). Isabel's partner Walter died in 1882 aged 46. Isabel THOMAS nee BECK herself died in Brighton in 1887 aged 57 (at the home of her daughter Caroline TICEHURST nee THOMAS).
